Ask Doc Rock | Just Friends...?

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

Dear Doc Rock,

My boyfriend used to have this "best friend" where they had a thing and claimed they loved each other. He says he is over her and loves me now, but I find it hard to believe. I need some advice.

Sincerely,

Jealously in Love

Dear Jealously,

The first thing I thought of when I read your question was that there has to be something keeping you from giving him your full trust. This is a very sticky situation. Chances are they will always be best friends and it may be hard for you.In addition to them being best friends, they were also lovers. I think you should definitely confront him about your feelings and let him know that you need to feel secure that he loves you and not her. I think you will know as examples: If he ignores you to text her while she's having a meltdown...PROBLEM...if he says "she needs me"...PROBLEM....The girl has to have other "best friends" she can get to "help" her!!

You need to let him know while you respect their relationship, there needs to be boundaries and he needs to pull back and not make himself so readily available in respect to your relationship.

Another point I want to make is if he does hold up his end of the deal but the best friend doesn't respect your relationship by continually asking for his attention every waking minute, you will need to have a talk with her personally because if he does it, chances are he will half-ass it and not get the point across. You Got This! Good Luck, Rock
