Ask Doc Rock | Sticky Bandit

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

Dear Doc. Rock,

My friend constantly steals from places!

We can't go anywhere without her stealing something! The bigger problem is that she has me stealing now and I don't know what to do. I want to stop, but it's so easy at some places to just take it and not pay. I'm trying to save my money and I work hard for it. What do I do?

Sincerely, Sticky Fingers

Dear Sticky,

Full disclosure: I have shop lifted a few times in my life when I was younger. I've stopped because it isn't right (or legal!) and you need to stop stealing immediately.

If you are caught, your record will be tarnished forever and when you apply to jobs in the future, your employer will see you have a record of theft.

How much do you trust a person who steals and would you want them to work for you?

If you do not have the money to buy something, then you shouldn't have it until you can afford it. You say you work hard for your money...so did the people who made the things you steal... Consider it this way...after all is said and done, the more products get stolen from stores, the more the prices go up to cover the costs of the missing product. Stores had to pay for those things and so do you! "But Doc. Rock, retail has a huge mark-up so they paid like nothing for it!" While that may have some truth, that's business! Stop stealing, and work harder for the things you want. When you make more, you can afford to spend more and it gives you a greater feeling knowing you worked hard for something you wanted. Stop Robbing Yourself, Rock p.s. Tell your friend to cut the shit, too.
